Choosing the right dog—or the right training path—comes with a lot of questions. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about dog training, protection dogs, puppies, and placement in New Jersey.
If you’re unsure where to start, that’s normal. Our goal is to provide clear, honest guidance so you can make the right decision for your home, experience level, and goals.
What services does Metro K9 Academy offer in New Jersey?
Metro K9 Academy is a family-owned breeding, development, and training program based in Randolph, New Jersey. We specialize in German Shepherds and Dobermans, offering puppies, started juveniles, trained adult dogs, and structured training programs that support real-life reliability.
In addition, we provide select professional services, including family and personal protection training (by evaluation), private drug detection, and K9 awareness and safety education.
What makes Metro K9 different from other dog trainers in NJ?
Our work starts with the dog—not a package or timeline. Metro K9 focuses on temperament, clarity, and suitability, using training to support and confirm those traits rather than cover problems.
We are intentionally selective, transparent about expectations, and focused on outcomes that last beyond the training field. Dogs are trained for real environments, and owners are coached so progress continues at home.
Do you only train German Shepherds and Dobermans, or do you train all breeds?
Metro K9 breeds and places exclusively German Shepherds and Dobermans. These are the breeds we know deeply and work with intentionally.
We do offer obedience and manners training for all breeds, but advanced protection and working-dog development programs are reserved for dogs with the appropriate temperament and structure.
Are protection dogs aggressive or unsafe?
Board-and-train is an option for families who want a structured jump-start. Dogs stay on-site and work daily on obedience, manners, and real-world behavior, with an emphasis on calm responses and consistency.
Board-and-train is helpful for some dogs—but not necessary or appropriate for all.
Are your dogs good with families and children?
Dogs placed through Metro K9 are selected for steady temperaments and calm behavior, but responsible ownership always matters. We train dogs to live safely with families and coach owners on structure, boundaries, and handling so expectations stay clear for everyone involved.
Are your dogs good family pets for families with children?
Yes – when the match is right. Metro K9 dogs are selected for steady temperaments and calm behavior, and we train them for safe, real-life family living. We’ll also coach you on structure, boundaries, and handling, so everyone in the home stays on the same page.
Do you sell trained protection dogs?
We place select trained German Shepherds and Dobermans after evaluation. Dogs are matched based on temperament, experience level, and lifestyle—not intensity or appearance.
These dogs are trained to live normally with their families and respond appropriately when needed.
How are your puppies bred and raised?
Our puppies come from carefully selected lines with a focus on health, temperament, and real-life suitability. Puppies receive early handling, exposure, and structured routines before placement.
We are upfront about each puppy’s strengths, needs, and long-term expectations so families can make informed decisions.
Do you offer private narcotics or drug detection services in NJ?
Yes. Metro K9 provides discreet, private narcotics/drug detection services throughout New Jersey when appropriate. These services are handled professionally and confidentially, with the goal of providing clear information—not creating alarm.
Detection work is evaluated case-by-case to ensure it’s the right solution for the situation.
Can first-time dog owners work with Metro K9?
Yes, absolutely—when expectations are realistic. Many first-time owners succeed with working breeds when they have proper guidance, structure, and support.
Part of our role is helping owners choose the right level of dog and training for their experience and lifestyle.
What is your Board & Train program?
Board & Train allows dogs to live and train on-site at our Randolph facility. Dogs receive structured daily training while owners receive clear instructions so results transfer smoothly back home.
This program is often recommended for owners who want a strong foundation built efficiently and correctly.
Do you offer nationwide placement?
Yes. Metro K9 offers guided nationwide placement for puppies and trained dogs. We work closely with buyers before and after placement to support long-term success.
How do I get started??
It starts with a conversation. We’ll talk through your goals, experience level, and environment to determine whether Metro K9 is the right fit—and which path makes the most sense.
